1 dead, 11 hospitalized after carbon monoxide leak at MI hotel

One child was killed and a dozen other people were injured in southwest MI on Saturday after a carbon monoxide leak in the indoor pool of a hotel in Niles.

Police say a Niles officer and a Berrien County sheriff's deputy were hospitalized for carbon monoxide overexposure.

Captain Don Wise of the Niles Fire Department said a high level of carbon monoxide was detected in the pool area.

The name of the child who died Saturday afternoon has not yet been released.

There were also high levels of carbon monoxide in other areas of the hotel, although not as high as in the pool area.

Emergency officials received reports that six children were unresponsive in the pool area of the motel in the southwest town of Niles.

"Six of them were inside the pool area unresponsive", Wise said. Responding officers were able to get the girl to respond to them and she was able to walk outside to an ambulance, police said.

They discovered there was an arrest warrant for a sealed indictment in federal court in Brooklyn, he said. The Los Angeles Times reported Veytia was taken into custody Monday at the border in San Diego.

"I have never seen something like this in 30 years", Wise added.

ABC 57 says that the hotel has been evacuated and is now being aired out.

The hotel's spokesman said the incident was "isolated" and is now working closely with local authorities to handle the situation, according to NBC. According to our reporting partners at WNDU, Police and Fire crews arrived on the scene around 10am, to the hotel on South 11th Street.

Local NBC affiliate WNDU reported that officials told them a malfunctioning pool heater is believed to have been responsible for the carbon monoxide leak.

"Carbon monoxide is odorless, colorless, tasteless".

The hotel, which had 24 rooms occupied at the time, was evacuated and will remain closed while the heating system is being repaired.
