The Thai Turtle That Ate Hundreds Of Coins Has Died

A turtle in Thailand which underwent surgery to remove hundreds of coins from her stomach has died from blood poisoning.

Tourists seeking good fortune had tossed loose change into a public pond where the turtle, nicknamed Bank, lived in Chonburi province, about 175 kilometers (110 miles) southeast of Bangkok.

The unusual mass of metal had cracked her shell, making the initial seven-hour operation necessary.

The turtle had appeared to be doing well after the operation, but a checkup Saturday revealed problems with her intestines.

Veterinarian Nantarika Chansue examines "Piggy Bank" while operating on the 25-year-old sea turtle for a second time on Sunday.

"At 10:10am she went with peace".

After having almost a thousand coins removed from its stomach in a four-hour operation two weeks ago, the turtle - nicknamed "Omsin", or "Piggy Bank", - died Tuesday.

In his letter, Cummings requested further investigation into Flynn's payments, which he had not previously disclosed. An additional $11,250 was paid to Leading Authorities, Flynn's speaking agents.

By the time they were removed, she was carrying 5kg (11lb) of coins.

Omsin, a 25 year old female green sea turtle, rests after a surgical operation to remove coins from her stomach at the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn Universiry in Bangkok, Thailand, March 6, 2017.

Unfortunately, the coins meant a death sentence for hungry Piggy Bank.

Doctors said the removal of the coins had created a space in Omsin's stomach that had probably blocked blood flow in her intestine.

A green sea turtle has a lifespan of about 80 years.

In Thailand many believe that tossing coins on turtles will bring longevity. Her operation had been reportedly crowdfunded though donations by the Thai public, which is now questioning the practice of throwing coins into water bodies for good luck.
