Despite of having too many problems encountered in the year’s Winter Olympics like the death of Georgian luge athlete Nodar Kumaritashvili, protests along the torch relay route, and bad weather conditions, the opening ceremony turned out well.

The 2010 Winter Olympics which was held at BC Place stadium on the north side of False Creek in Vancouver, British Columbia, was packed with over 50,000 people. This is the first time that the Olympics opening ceremony was held indoor. Canadian musicians who performed in this multisport event include highly acclaimed rock star Bryan Adams, Joni Mitchell, k.d. Lang, Nelly Furtado, and two-time Grammy winner Sarah McLachlan.

Vancouver Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony is largely dedicated to Nodar Kumaritashvili, a Georgian luger who died after losing control in a practice session at Whistler Sliding Center in Whistler, Canada. Kumaritashvili was the fourth athlete who died during Winter Olympics training. He is set to play for the luge men’s singles event which supposedly his Olympic debut.

Before the celebration starts, the scoreboards in the BC Place stadium went black, and then a message popped up – “Dedicated to the memory of Georgia Olympic athlete Nodar Kumaritashvili.” In the memory of Kumaritashvili, Olympic and Canadian flags were flown at half-mast.

The Georgian athletes and officials delegation wore black arm bands and black scarves during the parade of nations and had a black patch on their flag. While they were on the parade, sadness can be seen on their faces for they were still hurt about the tragic loss of their fellow countryman.
